The Accountant 2, with direction from the Financial Reporting Manager, assists in the preparation of the Department’s annual audited financial statements and supporting schedules.  This position establishes and maintains effective management, documented schedules, and work papers by researching, analyzing and interpreting program financial data. 


-          Prepares annual audited financial statements and supporting schedules, ensuring reporting conforms to Generally Accepted Accounting principles (GAAP)

-          Researches, analyzes, and interprets program financial data used in compilation of State’s Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) or other State and Federal financial reports

-          Utilizes automated accounting systems and applications to retrieve and review financial data

-          Makes recommendations for improvement, applying knowledge and skills, current accounting theory or other specific accounting requirements

-          Gathers and compiles data for proposed adjusting journal entries and expenditure corrections for management approval

-          Composes correspondence, replying to auditor or Department program inquiries.

-          Presents or request information requiring considerable discretion and judgment


Knowledge of:

-          Principles, concepts, practices, methods and techniques of government accounting

-          GAAP

-          Internal control structures and fiscal management

-          Methods and techniques of automated accounting systems, including various software packages

-          Reference materials, such as Federal regulations, Arizona Revised Statutes, applicable agency manuals, policies and procedures

-          Financial research methodologies, such as random valid statistical sampling

Skill in:

-          Task orientation and accomplishment

-          Analysis, interpretation and communication of financial data

-          Techniques required to maintain accounting record through automated accounting systems

-          Supervision, including interpersonal skills and imparting knowledge to others

-          Oral and written communications

Ability to:

-          Analyze and evaluate data and situations

-          Write reports and make recommendations

-          Maintain professional interpersonal relationships within and outside the Department

-          Complete projects within given time frames


-          One year of experience as Accountant 1 or equivalent.


-          Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting.
