The Division of Business and Finance (DBF) is seeking an experienced and highly motivated individual to join our team as an Accountant Specialist 1 with the Payroll Unit. Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

- Reviews, analyzes, and verifies vendor statements, invoices, employee travel claims and payroll documents

- Creates the fiscal transaction utilizing the applicable automated accounting system. These systems include the Arizona Financial Information System (AFIS), ProcureAZ, Human Resources Information System (HRIS), and Microsoft applications.

- Researches unresolved financial documents and responds to vendor, traveler, client, and employee inquiries

- Gathers and compiles financial data for reports

- Consults with the supervisor, presenting and resolving complex transactions

- Applies accounting principles and practices of governmental accounting while exercising discretion and independent judgment within established practices.


- The candidate will have knowledge of the principles, concepts, practices, methods and techniques of government accounting and fiscal management

- Knowledge of rules and regulations established for the work system or DES;

- Knowledge of methods and techniques of data processing as related to accounting practices; fundamental principles of accounting; and general fiscal and financial record keeping practices..

- Skill in basic math; data entry; analysis and interpretation of financial data; verbal and written communication

- Customer service; maintaining positive interpersonal relationships;

- Effective time management; report preparation; and Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and Access

- Ability to research and compile fiscal and statistical information; analyze and interpret fiscal and statistical data; reconcile records and reports

- Ability to maintain records; prioritize multiple tasks; analyze financial data; and effectively communicate findings to management orally and in writing.

- One year of accounting experience is also desired
