The Auditor 3 conducts field audits and other investigations of Arizona employers to ensure compliance with Federal and State Unemployment Insurance (UI) tax laws and regulations. This position may serve as a Lead auditor in the larger metropolitan offices, and is responsible for the most complex audits or special assignments.


-          Conduct audits of varying sizes and types of entities such as corporations, partnerships, limited liability companies, proprietorships chosen by the Tax Section’s automated selection process

-          SUTA/FUTA: Contact employers to determine by field examination the entity’s compliance with state tax rate statutes.

-          Ensure compliance with state and federal employment tax reporting requirements through shared results of state audits with IRS employment tax offices and investigation.

-          Ensure proper payment of Unemployment benefits; ensure compliance with registration and reporting requirements according to Tax Section procedures.  

-          Determine enforcement action appropriate to the issue, prepare documentation for management approval to initiate the process for assessment estimates service of subpoena or court order.  

-          Analyze account and identify potential issues; assist Tax Section management, the Appeals Unit or personnel form the Attorney General’s office with contested cases arising from field audit actions.

Assist employers or their representatives and the general public with information           


Knowledge of:

-          Business entities, Corporations, Limited Liability Companies, Partnerships, and Proprietorships

-          Accounting systems, audit procedure and Field Unit policies, and Field office and Section operating procedures

-          federally mandated documentation requirements for field audits (Tax Performance System)

-          Internet research sites for state and federal regulatory agencies

Skill in:

-          Researching relevant statutes, rules, precedent cases

-          Applying audit procedure, mathematical computation and communication

-          compiling information from examination of records

-          Interpersonal skills applied in interview of employers, their representatives or workers

Ability to:

-          Plan work schedule, manage time effectively and meet deadlines

-          Make correct employment and tax determinations

-          Communicate tax provisions to business owners or the public in general


-          Candidates must have one year experience as a Revenue Field Auditor 2, and a minimum of 12 hours of Accounting coursework and professional tax auditing, accounting, or closely related experience; or a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a Business field with the requisite accounting coursework, candidates must also have on the job supervisory experience

-          Have a current, valid state issued driver’s license appropriate to the assignment. Employee is subject to driver’s license record checks and must maintain an acceptable driving record, valid motor vehicle insurance and registration, and must complete any required training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12).

-          Successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify), applicable to all newly hired State employees

-          Successfully pass background and reference checks. Employment is contingent upon completion of the above-mentioned process and the agency’s ability to reasonably accommodate any restrictions
