JOB SUMMARY:

This position conducts field audits and investigations of Arizona employers to ensure compliance with State and Federal unemployment tax laws and regulations. Tax Auditors work independently in the field, directly with employers, their accountants or other representatives, analyzing, interpreting, and applying statutes, rules, and precedent decisions of the Unemployment Tax Section or other state and federal agencies. Compliance is achieved through audit of accounting systems and financial records; investigating employer liability, worker classifications, computing and assessing tax, interest and penalties; collecting delinquent reports and taxes; educating the public, both individually and in groups; and assisting the agency in tax related hearings. 

JOB DUTIES: 

-          Travel is required - Employees may be required to use their own transportation as well as maintaining valid motor vehicle insurance and current Arizona vehicle registration; however, mileage will be reimbursed.

-          Plan and conduct field audits of employer records

-          Timely resolutions of issues related to disputed wage amounts and/or employer liability

-          Delinquent payroll reports: Analyze account and identify potential issues.

-          Appeals: Assist Tax Section management, the Appeals Unit and personnel staff from the Attorney General’s Office, as well as testify at hearings

-          Administrative Reports: Prepare & submit daily field report documents.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs):

-          Accounting systems, audit procedure and field policies

-          Knowledge of internet research sites for state and federal regulatory agencies.

-          Apply audit procedure, mathematical computation and communication skills.

-          Skill In compiling information from examination of records.

-          Ability to plan work schedule, manage time effectively and meet deadlines.

-          Ability to make correct employment and tax determinations.

-          Ability to communicate tax provisions to business owners or the public in general.

 

SELECTIVE PREFERENCE(S):

-          Preferred candidates will have professional tax auditing, accounting or closely related experience;

-          or a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a Business field with the requisite accounting coursework.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS: 

-          Successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify), applicable to all newly hired State employees

-          Successfully pass background and reference checks. Employment is contingent upon completion of the above-mentioned process and the agency’s ability to reasonably accommodate any restrictions

-          Have a current, valid State issued driver’s license appropriate to the assignment. Employee is subject to driver’s license record checks and must maintain an acceptable driving record, valid motor vehicle insurance and registration, and must complete any required training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12.) If an Out of State Driver License was held within the last 39 months, a copy of your MVR (Motor Vehicle Record)
