IT Generalist Student Intern

The Department of Economic Security (DES), Division of Technology Services, (DTS), provides automation support for all of the DES programs and services such as Aging and Adult Services, Benefits and Medical Eligibility, Child Support Services, Developmental Disabilities, and Employment and Rehabilitation Services. DES programs and operation division employee approximately 7,800 employee whom provides support and services to over 2 million Arizonan.  DTS ensures systems are compatible, interchangeable, not redundant, wherever technically/economically feasible. 

This is a paid internship. The Student Internship assignment will last approximately 3-4 months between May through August.  All positions are in Phoenix, Arizona.  The Student Intern reports to a Supervisor for direction and coaching.  This position works within well-defined parameters.  The person in this position will work closely with Information Technology (IT) teams and agency/project staff to identify business needs, reporting, and data analysis needs for an assigned area to make sound business decisions.  Student interns may work on existing and new initiatives as teams move toward a predefined project/scenario that creates the most value for them. DES/DTS is offering internships in the following areas:

-        Enterprise Architecture

-        Digital UX - Architecture, Design, and Development

-        Data Analytics and Visualization

-        Collaboration & Workflow using technologies such as Microsoft SharePoint

-        .Net and Java Development (using Scrum/Agile methodologies)

-        Alignment between Business and IT ( Business Analyst)


-        Gain understanding and experience of how government and information technology supports its community

-        Aid in identifying business needs

-        Assist with research and analysis

-        Work on initiatives


Knowledge of:

-        Microsoft products

-        Understanding of information technology

Skill in:

-        Strong analytical and problem-solving

-        Effective communication (verbal and written)

-        Interpersonal skills

Ability to:

-        Work on a team or independently

-        Balance, prioritize and multi-task


-        The candidate must be a college or university level student at a Junior or Senior year level, or in a master’s program or a doctoral or post-doctoral program at an accredited 4-year college or university with a focus in computer science, information technology, business intelligence or related field and have completed intermediate coursework. 

-        The ideal candidate should maintain a GPA of 3.0 or better.

-        The candidate must have unrestricted right to work in the US without needing sponsorship.   


-        Have a current, valid state issued driver’s license appropriate to the assignment. Employee is subject to driver’s license record checks and must maintain an acceptable driving record, valid motor vehicle insurance and registration, and must complete any required training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12).

-        Apply for and show proof of receipt of a valid Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card that meets Level One requirements

-        Successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify), applicable to all newly hired State employees

-        Successfully pass background and reference checks. Employment is contingent upon completion of the above-mentioned process and the agency’s ability to reasonably accommodate any restrictions
