Working with limited supervision, the Refrigeration Mechanic schedules, inspects, services, and repairs a wide variety of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVACR) equipment and systems to ensure safe, efficient, and comfortable operation for employees and residents of the Arizona Training Program at Coolidge. 


-          Schedule periodic HVACR service

-          Repair and maintain mechanical systems to include HVACR systems, commercial and residential laundry systems (which includes a boiler), and other appliances in compliance with OSHA regulations

-          Install new HVACR equipment and systems

-          Rebuild and recondition system components

-          Perform general electrical, plumbing, and related maintenance work associated with servicing, repairing, and installing HVACR systems

-          Prepare and maintain periodic reports of work activities for supervisor

-          Ensure shop and assigned state-owned vehicle are properly monitored, serviced, kept clean, and adequately stocked with parts, tools, and necessary products

-          Participate in job-site safety seminars and training to maintain HVACR certifications


Knowledge of:

-          Operating principles of various types of HVACR equipment and systems

-          Test equipment, tools, and procedures associated with diagnosing problems and malfunctions in HVACR systems and equipment

-          Operating principles of various types of control systems used on HVACR systems and equipment, and associated heating and ventilation systems

-          Procedures for inspecting, servicing, repairing, and installing wide variety of HVACR equipment and systems, including large scale commercial systems

-          Government regulations regarding the conservation, recovery, and recycling of refrigerants, including regulations concerning proper handling and disposal of fluids and pressurized gases

-          Laundry equipment and appliances, both commercial and residential

-          Safety procedures specific to using protective gear, tools for staying safe, identifying hazards, chemical safety, and avoiding shock

Skill in:

-          Diagnosing problems and malfunctions in a wide variety of HVACR equipment and systems

-          Diagnosing problems and malfunctions in a variety of HVACR control devices

-          Inspecting, servicing, repairing, and installing a wide variety of HVACR equipment and systems, including large scale commercial systems

-          Repairing and installing laundry equipment and appliances, both commercial and residential

-          Maintaining records and preparing reports

Ability to:

-          Apply Federal, State and local laws, rules and local building codes

-          Use blueprints or design specifications to install or repair HVACR systems

-          Maintain a safe work environment

-          Communicate effectively with colleagues, residents, and other customers

-          Manage time and organize tasks efficiently


Four years of journey level experience inspecting, servicing, repairing, and installing HVACR equipment and systems.


-          Possession of and ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver's license appropriate to the assignment.  Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver's license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete any driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12).

-          Possess a valid fingerprint clearance card, or obtain a fingerprint clearance card within seven working days of employment
